AJAY MEHTA

General Manager for New Energies Research & Technology, Shell

Ajay Mehta works in Shell’s technology organization where he serves as the General Manager for New Energies Research & Technology. He leads a global team of over a hundred scientists and engineers dedicated to developing innovative and competitive technologies to meet the demand for more and cleaner energy.  Ajay has worked at Shell for his entire career of 24 years.  Over the course of his career, he has assumed a broad range of technical and leadership roles in Deepwater, Production Operations, CO2 Mitigation, Project Engineering, and General Management.  He is a subject matter expert in natural gas hydrates and has served as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Society of Petroleum Engineers.  


Ajay serves as a Board Member of the MIT Sustainability Initiative, Energy Advisory Board (EAB) at the University of Houston, Carbon Leadership Board (CLB) at Rice University, Institute of Carbon Management (ICM) at UCLA, and the Society of Asian Engineers & Scientists (SASE).  He also serves on the steering committee of the Energy & Biosciences Institute (EBI) at UC Berkeley, MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), Stanford Energy Alliance (SEA), Materials and Chemical S&T Directorate at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and the Center for Innovation in New Energies (CINE) at the University of Campinas in Brazil.


Ajay holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, India, a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
